Quick verdict

Joogiyul (주기율) is a cafe in Gangnam’s office district, a 2-minute walk from Exit 1 of Seonjeongneung Station. What makes it useful is the layout: semi-enclosed group booths, a quieter separate room, an open hall and a terrace, so there is a fitting seat for a team tea break, an outside meeting or solo work. The coffee holds up too, with a choice of beans, a signature orange coffee and a good Basque cheesecake. It has become our team’s default spot for meetings around Seonjeongneung.

A cafe with a curious name

I nearly walked past it. On a side street near Seonjeongneung Station there is a warm wooden storefront with an unusual name: Joogiyul. It reminded me of the periodic table of elements (jugiyulpyo in Korean). A soft, stylish-looking cafe with such a science-class name made me curious enough to go in.

Next to the door, a small sign reads “a way to record precious feelings” (소중한 감정을 기록하는 방법). Only then did the name start to make sense to me: recording feelings periodically, at a steady rhythm. Once I read it that way, the whole cafe looked different.

Inside, the space is much larger and more layered than the front suggests. It runs from the entrance hall further in, and each area has a slightly different mood.

Why this Gangnam cafe works for meetings

The Seonjeongneung area is an office district rather than a residential one, with office buildings lined up along Seolleung-ro in Nonhyeon-dong. Cafes here usually win either on fast takeaway turnover or by designing for people to stay. Joogiyul is clearly the second type.

  • Semi-enclosed group booths: surrounded by navy sofas, these cut out surrounding noise and keep you out of view. It is not a meeting room, but it works like one. My colleagues always pick this area for onboarding and tea breaks.
  • A separate darker room: dark walls, low lighting and black chairs, almost hidden from the rest of the cafe. It suits a quiet one-on-one work conversation more than a group meeting, and would work for an interview or an outside meeting.
  • Open hall: large windows bring in daylight under a crystal chandelier and a concrete ceiling, a combination that should clash but somehow works. Good for a casual meeting or working alone on a laptop.
  • Terrace: lined with plants, with outside air coming through. On a sunny day in April near Seonjeongneung it is a pleasant spot, and a surprise to find between office buildings.

As a marketer, I read this layout as very deliberate. Each area takes in a different kind of office-worker need: onboarding tea breaks, a meeting before a team dinner, outside meetings, focused solo work. Whatever brings you here, there is a seat that fits.

The bar is worth a look too: navy tiles, a stainless steel counter with the word “RETURN”, specialty bean packages on display and a note that you can choose your beans. The cafe is not only selling space; it takes its coffee seriously.

Coffee with a choice of beans, orange coffee and Basque cheesecake

I ordered an iced americano with the acidic bean. For me, the most important thing at Joogiyul is that you can choose the beans: a nutty one or one with more acidity, and the same iced americano becomes a completely different coffee depending on your pick. With the acidic bean, the fruity aroma comes alive and the first sip feels bright. As someone who drinks iced americanos almost exclusively, I value that choice.

I have also tried the orange coffee, since it is the signature. It tastes like the acidic iced americano with an extra layer of orange aroma, and it was easier to drink than I expected. Even if orange coffee sounds strange, you probably will not find it off-putting.

The Basque cheesecake has the deeply burnt top typical of the style. Inside it is moist, and the cheese is rich without being heavy. With the coffee, the acidity cuts the richness nicely.

The banana pudding I always used to order was sold out this time. If your timing is better, I recommend trying it.

An onboarding tea break

This visit was on the day our team’s new intern joined. The first day at a company is always a little awkward, and we wanted a place to ease that. A meeting room would be too stiff, and a random cafe near the office might not have the right seats.

The semi-enclosed booths fit the situation. You are shielded from view, you can focus on the conversation, and everyone orders what they like. Because the booth is slightly separated, there is less noise, so you can talk without raising your voice. When you are meeting someone for the first time, that matters more than you might think. Choosing Joogiyul whenever we have an outside meeting near Seonjeongneung has quietly become our team’s routine.
